What Is Blue Light?
Light is truly amazing. According to quantum mechanics it behaves as both a wave and a particle. Waves of light emit energy. Each wavelength of energy forms the electromagnetic spectrum, which can be broken down into gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet rays, visible and infrared light, and radio waves.
The human eye is only able to register energy on the visible light spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Blue Light is a part of the visible light spectrum and has one of the shortest wavelengths, producing a correspondingly high amount of energy.
Blue light isn’t rare. It’s been part of sunlight forever. But modern devices such as digital screens and fluorescent or LED lighting have introduced more sources which have significantly increased natural exposure. Our bodies use this part of the visible light spectrum positively to regulate natural sleep cycles. Blue light can help make you feel better and happier, react faster and increase alertness.
On the negative side the higher energy of Blue Light wavelengths flickers more often which can contribute to headaches, eyestrain and fatigue after many hours sitting in front of a computer or television. As wonderfully complex as our eyes have been designed they do not adequately filter out so much artificial Blue Light. Prolonged exposure may even cause damage to parts of our eyes like the retina and macular, and subsequently impair vision.
